Schneealm (Windberg) [1093]
The Windberg (1,904m) offers a magnificent panoramic view over the Vienna Basin, as far as the Dachstein and the Triglav, the highest mountain in Slovenia.
The start of the sporty Schneealm bike tour is easily accessible from the Mürztalradweg R5. Simply follow the Teichwirt Urani signs, take the B23 for a short distance and then turn off directly at the Teichwirt in the direction of Schneealm. Follow the asphalt road in the direction of Michlbauer (toll station). After approx. 2.5 km the gravel road begins. This gradually becomes steeper and steeper. A very steep ascent begins at the Kohlebnerstand (parking lot for cars). A first view of the Schneealpen Haus and the Rax distracts you a little from the effort. After a few hairpin bends, you pass the transmitter, where you can sometimes watch paragliders and hang gliders taking off. This is followed by a short, crisp section and from the unmanaged Kutatschhütte you have completed the greatest effort; the hilly route continues along the Scheealm plateau to the Michlbauerhütte, the Schneealpenhaus or the organic alpine dairy Lurgbauerhütte.
The three huts with their great culinary selection, a fantastic alpine plateau with lush green alpine meadows and an impressive panorama make up for the very demanding tour. As there are also many hikers on the route from the Kohlebnerstand to the alpine plateau and on the alpine paths, it goes without saying that you should treat each other with consideration and respect. After an extensive rest and refreshment stop, you return to the valley along the same route after this strenuous but extremely rewarding tour in the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park.
